The Music Gladitator Manual

•        Understand the basis of an A&R person’s instinct
•        Have a marketable product and image

Possessing the characteristics and the knowledge mentioned will able you to take full advantage of the potential
God has given you for excellence to succeed as a gladiator in the music biz.
In order for you to become victorious, you must put everything you have into it. In fact, you should not even
attempt stepping into the music arena unless you are willing to put in all the effort and hard work it takes to make it
all happen.
Because of your focus and hard work, you will be able to listen to the cheers of all the spectators gazing at your
skills and claiming you as their champion. You, the music gladiator!
Below is some additional information you should about this music business is:

One: According to the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) approximately 90% of recorded music
released by MAJOR recording labels fails to make a profit. Therefore, as an independent recording label, you
must be more careful with the choices made in releasing an artist, because you cannot afford the cost of failure as
a major can. Of course, one good thing is an independent label will not pay as much as a major label pays to
promote its artist. Also, an independent label dose not have to sell as many CD’s as a major company must sell in
order to make a profit.

Two: The budgets for recording, manufacturing and selling recordings should tie into the amount of projected
CDs you will sell. It’s estimating how many CDs you could possibly sell which should dictate your budget for
recording, manufacturing and promoting.
Once you have established a history in selling CDs, you will be able to create a better estimate of your gross
income from your sales history, which will allow you to create a better budget for your projects.

Three: A new major label artist could spend anywhere from $100,000 to $500,000 to make a CD. Some artist’s
budget could hit the $1,000,000 mark.
An independent label artist will normally spend less than $15,000. Even less if your company is starting with no
fans. The fact remains; you must spend money to become successful in this endeavor.

Four: As for the cost in manufacturing CDs, major labels pay approximately $.55 for each CD, even less on many
occasions. The independent label could spend approximately $.65 for each CD. Of course they are ordering
approximately 100,000 CDs annually to get such a price on CDs.
As for the independent label which orders less than 10,000, they could pay approximately $1.20 or more for each
CD because they are ordering a lesser amount the major labels. This is why I would advise any new independent
label to search for the best deal possible, which could surprise you with a big smile financially speaking. It’s worth
the time.

Five: There are thousands of people who keep trying and trying to succeed in this industry only to keep pouring
hundreds upon thousands of dollars to keep the recording studios and manufactures making money. Of course,
the smart thing in today’s environment is to create your own studio to get things going. In the long run it will be
less expensive.

Six: There are thousands upon thousands of people who keep trying to succeed and get nowhere in the music
business. However, I’ve noticed something in people which I myself have been guilty of as well.
“Doing the same things repeatedly and expecting one day the end results will change”

Seven: Always improve your knowledge in this industry and don’t be afraid to step outside your box. Realize your
weaknesses and strength. If something fails once, then re-evaluate and correct the problem with a process
change.
Don’t continue to do the same things hoping something will change which will produce better result. Realize what
caused you to fail and change it.
And some advice to the entrepreneur starting an independent label, don’t select a worthless artist to make your
company a success. This type of thinking will lead you and you label to failure.

Eight: Before venturing out on your quest to travel the roads to success in the music industry, you must be always
be honest with yourself and keep re-evaluating your priorities.
You must also know in order to obtain success in any undertakings; especially within the music industry, you must
first be willing to give up the normal or what some people define as the average person’s life.
This is why you should ask yourself, “Am I truly willing to work harder than I ever worked before, or am I truly
content with doing the same things which I have done in the past?” If you fail, will you do the same things again,
expecting different results? Are you going to listen to people who know less than you?
Can you say you are ready to change your lifestyle to obtain your goal?
The madness of wishing, hoping and wanting to accomplish something different and ending up with the same
results as before in any person’s life is senseless.
Having to realize every year the yearning to accomplish the same things which you desired to accomplish the year
before is a waste of your time and energy. In fact, I would hate to see anyone at the end of the year realizing they
are no better off than they were the prior year.
This is something which happens because of people wishing and wanting certain things in their life to occur.
However, the first reality about accomplishing something is to realize what you must be able and willing to do,
which is work. You should accept this fact up front. It’s harder to achieve success in the jungle of the music
industry than work for others.
Therefore you will need to work and focus much harder to make your success. Remember. IT CAN BE DONE!

Nine: Know what you need to do and how you are going to do it. You should not try doing too many things at
once. CHOOSE WHAT YOU NEED TO FOCUS ON AND DO IT!
Remember your entire career is in your hands! Your success depends on how hard you work. There are only 24
hours in a day. If you sleep 10 hours a day because you partied the nights before, you have wasted time.
People training for the Olympics know how to sacrifice. They work hard for the gold, which is why they eliminate
the little things for the larger overall goal!

Ten: Selling is everything. Selling your product is the key to success. No sales, No money. No Money, No Income.
No Income, No Success.
You have just wasted your time.

Eleven: Know how to describe the music you are selling in clear terms. There are no bin labels in any record
store identified as “Hip Hop and R&B with a little Rock”
If you are not sure, then ask someone else to describe your music.

Twelve: Know who your target market is. Who are the people interested in your style of music and where they
hang out? Collect e-mail addresses, find out their birthdays. And you should keep in mind how marketing
strategies take time to unfold, while continue to remember how very competitive the music industry is. An industry
where those who work the hardest, sell and perform the most, remain focused, believe in him or her self usually
see success!
